Fragment

“Look at the moon.”

“Full moon. Yes it’s lovely. People go a bit crazy when it’s full moon and weird things happen. Did you read in the paper where a woman and her husband were having a meal in a restaurant in Charleville of all places and a woman in a car mounted the footpath and crashed through the big glass window and smashed the woman up against the wall and she was killed. The husband was badly injured also and he’s in hospital. It was the Sun Something Restaurant. A Chinese restaurant in Charleville for Christ’s sake. You would think that you were pretty safe.”

“When you gotta go you gotta go sort of thing? The inexorable nature of fate and all that?”

“It’s scary.”

“Perhaps though, the driver of the car had been wronged by the man and when she was just driving along the street one night in Charleville and she saw him sitting in the cafe enjoying chicken chow mein or whatever with his wife and the steering wheel simply broke free of her conscious mind and directed the car towards the focus of her attention. Now that’s scary too.

“Yes. But not as scary as there being no reason or purpose in her death.”

“I suppose that’s one way of looking at it.”
